About us

What is NanoMemPro?

NanoMemPro is the European Network of Excellence dedicated to membrane science and technology. It is a 4-year project funded by the EC. Thirteen European research institutes, all leaders in the field of membrane technologies, are collaborating to reach an effective integration. Their research interest focuses on the exploration of nanoscale material properties to expand membrane macroscale applications.

What is a Network of Excellence?

Networks of Excellence were created in FP6. They are transnational multipartner projects grouping together the main players in Europe on a given research topic. Networks of Excellence are conceived as incentives for structural and organisational change to overcome the fragmentation of the European research landscape. The main objective is a durable restructuring and reshaping of the way research is carried out on that topic in Europe.

What does integration mean?

Integration means coordinated research activities, common plans for equipment and its sharing, training and mobility developed at the European level, joint actions towards industry or the public at large. The Network aims at acting as the interface between research, industry and society, and thus, at offering the best answers to the needs for an effectively organized membrane science and technology R&D in Europe.

What are the activities of NanoMemPro?

NanoMemPro’s activities are divided into 3 main categories. Integrating activities are creating the optimal conditions for a lasting integration of the partner organisations and their resources (people and equipment). Research activities investigate and implement new methods and technologies for membrane development, before assessing them in actual applications. Spreading of Excellence activities develop training and knowledge dissemination actions both inside the network and outside to all interested actors.

Which areas of application are encompassed?

NanoMemPro activities cover membrane applications in the fields of materials, chemicals, energy, environment, food and health.

How many researchers are involved in NanoMemPro?

More than 120 researchers and 50 PhD students are participating in the Network. They represent a unique task force to address membrane science and technology-related issues. Thanks to their expertise, they will help you set up the right partnership and bring to success your project.

What is the EMH?

The European Membrane House, EMH, is the future legal entity, to be created soon, arising from NanoMemPro. This international non-profit making organisation will ensure the further development of the activities launched in NanoMemPro to promote membrane technologies, and structure a high-performance research area for the benefit of all stakeholders.

What is a SBRA?

A Strategic Business and Research Agenda, SBRA, identifies business drivers and targets for innovation. It then defines knowledge and technology capabilities to be used, as well as technologies and means to be developed and combined to reach these targets, according to a mid to long term roadmap. NanoMemPro scientists, academics, engineering companies, membrane producers, and membrane end users are working together at a common Strategic Business and Research Agenda for membrane technologies in Europe.

About you

How can I join NanoMemPro?

At the time the project was launched, one single institution was selected in each country. Each core partner has the task to try and integrate new capabilities in the Network. If you are interested in our activities, you can get in touch with your country representative in the Network or the project coordinator. As an individual expert, you might join NanoMemPro’s Club of Expertise. If you represent a company, you can join our Club of Interest. Soon, you will also be able to become a member of the EMH.

How can NanoMemPro be of interest for my company?

NanoMemPro represents a huge R&D capability that you can mobilize for your project. The SBRA for membrane technologies in Europe is meant to address the needs expressed by industrialists. That is why European industry is strongly involved in its preparation. Your input can make it even more valuable. Finally, your company can join NanoMemPro’s Club of Interest.

What is NanoMemPro’s Club of Interest?

The European industry is integrated in the NanoMemPro initiative as a Club of Interest (CoI). Its members can play a key role in generating and exploiting the technology developed in the labs of the network. They can advise on the industrial and citizen needs and thus orientate research projects. By joining the Club of Interest, you get informed through a specific newsletter. You can access NanoMemPro equipment and technology offers, participate in the workshops organised by the network, benefit from the European high level education actions developed by NanoMemPro (Master and PhD level) taking students as trainees in your company, for periods of time varying c.a. from 3 to 6 months, and take part in Post doc programmes.

What is the NanoMemPro equipment database?

It is an online database recording the shared-access equipment and facilities at the different partners’. It includes analytical and membrane characterisation equipment as well as models, calculation tools and software. This database allows an optimized management of equipment, and facilitates the access of both NanoMemPro and CoI members to information.

What is the NanoMemPro Technology offers database?

This database lists the membrane technology offers available within the network. If you are looking for a new technology, you may find one or include your technology request/offer in the database.

What does NanoMemPro for students?

If you are a student and wish to embark for studies at the European level, you can get informed on the various Master and PhD courses in membrane science and engineering offered at the different partner Universities. NanoMemPro has set up a labelling process to acknowledge and promote European educational paths. You might be eligible to this label! Besides, you can search for a job or training period in the field of membrane technology, or post your CV on NanoMemPro Mobility Portal in the Offers section.
